Originally built in the mid-1840s, St. Michael's Cathedral was completely destroyed by fire in January 1966, and was rebuilt to exactly mimic the original. The cathedral, constructed in a decidedly Russian architectural style, once served as the seat of the Russian Orthodox Diocese in North America and currently displays many of the icons and religious objects that survived the fire. The cathedral is located west of the Sitka National Historic Park.
